“Lubbock deserves a first-class facility,” LEPAA Board Chairman Tim Collins announced while speaking at the design unveiling press conference for The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.
LEPAA, or the Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association, has been working towards the construction of a spectacular performance facility for three and a half years. A multipurpose performance venue has been a community aspiration for over 25 years, and now, after months of design development and collaboration between local and international development team partners, it is well on its way! The Buddy Holly Hall presents an opportunity for growth and a point of pride for the Lubbock community, much like its namesake. The design is the result of the innovative work of a creative team of talented architects and engineers, who focused on the enrichment of Lubbock’s cultural heritage. This vision is the driving force for the entire development team, including: Garfield Public/Private LLC, Parkhill, Smith & Cooper Inc., MWM Architects, Lee Lewis Construction Inc., Diamond Schmitt Architects, Schuler Shook Inc., Jaffe Holden, SMG, and the staff here at LEPAA. The facility will attract new visitors, commercial development, and create jobs, as well as provide educational opportunities through its partnership with LISD.
“This facility is inspired by and is in the spirit of Lubbock, West Texas, and the South Plains,” said Matthew Lella, principal at Diamond Schmitt Architects. “It’s absolutely not our intention to bring some alien form and plunk it down in the middle of Lubbock. It’s got to feel like it’s come from Lubbock, and it will feel like that because it will come from Lubbock,” Lella stated. Diamond Schmitt’s vision for the facility is that it can compete with the best performing arts centers in the world, but that it’s still inspired by and in the spirit of this region.
“There’s a lot of hard work going into this,” Collins stated. Although there is much work to do before the first curtain call, one thing is clear: the Lubbock community is ready for The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.
